Tough time for MBTA Commuter Rail

MBTAlogo.jpgAlong with the panicked teenager (who hasn't had that sinking feeling when your train speeds through your stop?), the Globe has reported that a pedestrian was struck and killed by a commuter train this morning. The article also notes that a railroad worker was fatally injured by a piece of machinery at another commuter rail station.

The MBTA website is silent about these accidents and deaths. Surely the MBTA should make some kind of public statement on their website?

Just so. I watched the MBTA site during the day after the train mowed down the guy on the track. It reported "an incident," "operational difficulty," and then the the Orange Line was back on schedule.

The local media didn't cover it or barely. The Globe ran the minimal release the T spokesman provided. The MBTA doesn't have it on their news area nor on the Transit Police one.

Another person died, another nameless person. We are left to wonder if this was a homeless guy or just someone whose wallet went missing during the collision.

Meanwhile, a 9-year-old boy seriously hurt after a crash in Roslindale made all the TV, radio and paper sites. But the guy at Green Street died either from the impact or getting electrocuted.

I'm with you on expecting the MBTA to do let these deaths pass with no mention. The local news media aren't much better in not keeping us informed and following up.
