The way to JFK

This Sunday's New York Times had a good contributed op-ed (PDF) with some ideas on how to make the Air Train service more user-friendly (to both JFK and Newark).

Despite the problems, Airtrain ridership keeps growing so Airtrain must be filling a role and doing it better than the author of the opinion piece thinks. As bad as it is even the author uses it.

The possibility of setting up dedicated areas at Penn Station is a non-starter as trains are assigned different platforms.

The idea of foreign language signs is intriguing but complex. You see most of the foreign language speakers are coming off longhaul international flights and they are carrying a lot of baggage, not exactly the crowd that will take two or three trains to reach their final destination.

As for publicizing it, the author forgets to mention that NJ Transit does designate all trains serving the airport with a "EWR" on signboards at most stations. If people can't get off at a stop that ONLY SERVES AIRPORT and is called Newark Airport they need to go back to gradeschoo.

The LIRR doesn't designate its trains last time I was there, but just about every train serves Jamaica so it's superflous. People do have to know to get off at Jamaica and maybe a station name change is in order.
