Lots of new trains, just not here
The New York Times business section has an article about how European train building companies like Siemens are doing good business these days with new projects in eastern and the western Europe and Asia. The article has a very good statement about the possibilities for high-speed rail construction in the United States:
Mr. LacĂ´te of Alstom said three conditions had to be fulfilled for a country to turn to high-speed rail: the political will, large population concentrations, and a level of economic prosperity adequate to pay for a rail system. "In the United States you have the second two," he said. "I am not sure that you have the first."
