More riders
Some news from the California Central Valley - Bay Area commute that people are giving up their cars and switching to transit because of high gas prices, and that it may be a longer-term trend.
"A September study released by GfK, a market research firm, showed some Americans altered their lifestyles by carpooling or riding public transit to save on gasoline when the price of fuel peaked at $2.50 per gallon."

Remember, all of California is not L.A. I just got back from my virgin trip to Sacramento, in the Central Valley for good measure, and the town is transit-supportive like I would never have believed. Downtown one evening my boyfriend overheard a teenage girl tell her friend (via cell phone) who had locked her keys in her car to "just take light rail already and call triple A in the morning." I mean, it's not NYC or even SFO, but that kind of mindset in Sacramento of all places has got to be heartening.
