Facts & Figures

Amtrak Map
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics is just a wealth of information with a well organized and clear web site. I was doing some research today and came across an interesting publication from 2000, The Changing Face of Transportation. There must be at least 50 or so graphs and tables running the gamut, here are a few highlights:

Transit Ridership: 1975-99 (Annual totals)
Amtrak Passenger Rail System: 2000
Amtrak Ridership: 1975-99 (Annual totals)
Domestic Terrorist Incidents: 1990-97
Worldwide Violent Acts Against Transportation by Mode: 1998

BTS has a fantastic service, called CTPP I believe, that let's you see commuter numbers by area -- so you can track how many people travel between, say, Baltimore City and Baltimore County, etc. It's so detailed you can actually get zip code to zip code commuting patterns. It's based off the Census, so it only gets updated every 10 years, but it's some of the most interesting data I've worked with.
