I have found LA's transit system quite useful, but with the understanding that for an out-of-towner like me it will take some research to utilize all that is there. I have stayed in Long Beach to call on the Ports, and then used the Blue Line to call on customers in downtown LA. I have done the same from Ontario and from Orange County using Metrolink to get downtown. And, I have used the Red Line to visit customers in North Hollywood. I have appreciated the break from LA traffic that their transit system gives me when I am on business trips.
Judging by the patronage each time I have ridden, LA's system appeals to a great many people, so all in all, I would say that LA's Transit System is very useful!
I found LA public transport to be so so. Great, given that it was awful 10 years ago. But bad given what an enormous metro area it is (14 million people). The subway (the Redline) is a tourist's dream, stopping at historic Union Station, Olvera Street, Hollywood, Universal studios. Plus it is useful if you are a highrise employee. Other than that, the system is far flung, pretty much always requiring a drive in a car, once you get back home. LA has hope, but it'll take 50 years of concerted effort, serious money, a big dreams.
The red line trains are *very* wide, too!
We used it from a park and ride on the gold line down towards disney. We drove up there (the bus service from disney was too confusing to figure out to be worth it) and took 3 different trains (yellow green red?) to get to hollywood. All members of my party felt reasonably secure even at night. There was police presence in the downtown station that we transfered at and nobody was harmed. We did see some wacky-people on the train going south just out of downtown, and the scenery isn't all that great, but otherwise it was a win for 2 days for us. (going to hollywood one day, and then universal the next)
If only we could have used it for the magic mountain trip! :)
Also, we rented a buick lesabre or something, big land yacht. Had 4 people in the car at all times, but the reason i did it was because getting in the car pool lane with an econobox is difficult! Just about have to pedal-to-the-medal with a 6 cyl. sometimes to get the speed differential going between lanes. Yikes!
