Tunnelling through Ruins

The New York Times has a fascinating article on building a new subway line in the Archeologically-rich city of Istanbul and the continual trade-off between history and modernity.

Istanbul is a really interesting place, I remember one Street where the parking spaces had old stone columns -- that looked older than most buildings in the US -- haphazardly laid down in between them.
