WMATA new, LONG station name signs
Something that occasionally inspires gripes among D.C. folks is some of the very, very long station names that pop up on Metrorail. By my count, the longest name is "U Street / African-American Civil War Memorial / Cardozo" at 56 characters, though "New York Avenue - Florida Avenue - Gallaudet University" is a close contender at 55 characters.
And the longer names proliferate: the newest additions are "Penn Quarter" to Archives-Navy Memorial, and "Brentwood" to Rhode Island Avenue. I took some photos of the new signs at Rhode Island Avenue - Brentwood station and went into a long discussion (much longer than even I had expected) about the oddities of this station's name.
By the way, the shortest name is Takoma, at six characters.

Less a comment on long station names (which I agree have gotten ridiculous) than on Brentwood in Price George's County: On the Pipeshaft, you wrote "Offhand I know of no part of Prince George's which is called Brentwood, but there is a municipality named North Brentwood.)"
Brentwood is a town right next to North Brentwood; it's actually a bigger municipality than North Brentwood. Brentwood, North Brentwood, and the D.C. neighborhood of Brentwood are all named after Robert Brent, the first mayor of Washington City, who owned land in both Price George's County and what was then Washington County and Washington City.
I will correct Brentwood; thanks!
With the current naming logic, "Dupont Circle" should become "Dupont Circle/Logan Circle/Johns Hopkins University" -- certainly no less true than putting Adams-Morgan with the Woodley Park station.
