It was a bad day for the NYC subway today, when a fire set by a homeless man got out of hand and destroyed a communication center at the Chambers Street station, reports The New York Times. The fire caused so much damage that full service on the A and C lines may not be restored for 3 to 5 years, officials said.

Let's put this in perspective. A large chunk of Lower Manhattan's telecommunications and electrical infrastructure was reconstructed in a matter of months. The WTC site was pretty much emptied in what, two years? Less?
And they're claiming it'll take three to five *years* to recover from a fire? Yes, I know it took out a vital control facility. Would it be too much to hope that the MTA has plans for said facilities?
Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I smell jockeying for funds here. What are the odds that the time for completion drops significantly once the requisite number of zeroes are provided?
Let's also put this into perspective: the MTA now says it will only take 6-9 months for service to be mostly, if not fully restored. Whoops - they "misspoke." Also, regarding the fire's cause, it's now being brandied about that it was MTA employees - geez, they were quick to blame the homeless guy...
