Rochester Toronto Ferry Speed Record

spiritofontario.bmp

The Rochester-Toronto Ferry (which was apparently been getting a lot of press, because this post keeps getting found by Google searchers) has something to celebrate -- a new speed record. According to Canadian American Transportation Systems, the vessel was clocked travelling at 55 mph during sea trials last week. It was excepted to top out at 50 mph.

The ship will begin making trips on May 1, 2004 and will accomodate 750 passengers, 220 vehicles, and up to 10 buses or large trucks.

Toronto has finally decided to build a ferry terminal, however, something that was up in the air as of several months ago. They are using $8 million from a legal settlement to fund the project, which is expected to break ground in two weeks.

Whether the project will actual encourage travel between the two cities is an open question, however. While Rochester is exceptionally excited about the project, the reaction in Toronto has been cooler.

To quote one Toronto reporter: "Why Rochester?"

Why Rochester?
Because you can't get to Manhattan via Lake Ontario, dummy.

Walter,

This site has the current "tentative" schedule for the ferry:

http://www.spiritofontario.com/asp/schedule.asp

Unfortunately, the site only appears to have US$ prices, but those prices are listed here:

Hope that helps.

The "Contact Us" section of the Spirit of Ontario homepage has an employment section. You can visit it here:

Carl: you're probably not qualified to operate the ship's shift key, however.

Fantastic, Finally a way to cut down travel time and get down to Rochester as well as Syracuse. Also an oppourtunity if cheap enough to see Redwing and American games!!!! Prices should be listed however. Come on Toronto this will increase tourism and mean easier access to the states.

Great independant info at:

The official site is:
Check out http://www.thebreeze.com or http://www.thebreeze.com/Index.asp and avoid the intro (which I recommend for non-high speed surfers, your wont miss much)

The gist of if is that it is much faster than the train or bus at about 2/3 the price! But who the heck needs/wants to go to Rochester? Toronto should'nt be that high on the list of Rochstonians either. I suppose it will be the scenic way to get to NewYork city from Toronto. The operator expects 90% of users to be traveling by car! It'll be fun watching does Yanks driving around downtown Toronto looking for affordable parking. They'll probably give up and go back home via Niagara falls. Once you've seen the CN tower, there is'nt much to see in Toronto anyway. The good news is that both docking sites will be accessible by public bus. The bad news is the privately operated service is nuts and is bound to go belly up within a year. A Toronto-Youngstown (North of Buffalo) crossing would make sense but the company got start up funding and lowns from the city of Rochester. Interestingly, there was a Rochester-Coubourg service untill 1950. Granted, only 14000 now live in Coubourg (compared to 2 million in Toronto), but the crossing would be much quicker than Rochester-Toronto. And there are plenty of fast dry ways to get from Cobourgh to Toronto (frequent train and intercity bus service on the busy Montreal/Ottawa-Toronto route).

The boat is brand new, but bassed on the pictures and stats, I've taken similar boats from Moroco to Spain and island hopping in Greece. Fast, yes. But not romantic or anything since you can't even go outside. Picture sitting in an airport waiting area for about 2 hours and it pretty much describes the trip.

Well - the ferry is here & it is amazing. You can go outside while the vessel is moving (just hold on) and there are many things to do on the ferry. Such as 2 movie theatres, several bars, shopping, and a wireless Inet connection. Since the ship has arrived the Port of rochester has been swamped with people... I think this is a great thing and all should embrace it!

I was looking at faster ways to get onto the Ethan Allen Express (which arrives NYC earlier than the Maple Leaf), and realized that I could have used that ferry.

Too bad it isn't running anymore.
