Hell's little angels

Kids aren't riding bikes as much as they used to. Apparently, parents won't let their children bike farther than they can see, fearing speeding drivers.

Are paranoid parents the first step in socializing children away from any method of conveyance other than automobiles?

They are only paranoid because there's nowhere safe to ride. Auto Dominance was already firmly entrenched when I grew up. My parents didn't care where I rode (I did nearly kill myself several times, but that's another story ;-) However, new developments since then often don't have any streets that go anywhere that aren't 60 feet wide at the intersection with no sidewalks. A nine-year-old on a huffy just doesn't belong there. I could go on... but this is your blog.
