Interestingly, I have been freezing on the Green line subway lately. The T in the summer can sometimes be uncomfortably stuffy and hot when the train's a/c isn't working, but more often the a/c is cranked on high and we're all shivering. It seems that in these trains the a/c is either on or off, and the drivers don't seem to notice the iciness. I guess those polyester uniforms are pretty insulating.

DC metro cars run the gamut - no a/c at all, something apparently running without actually moving any air, and hot as an oven. This is only one of the many metro mysteries I've wondered about over the years. Is the a/c in my car broken? Is the a/c all the cars broken? Is the driver clueless, lazy, or keeping the temp to his or her own comfort level? Strangely, though, I've never been on a freezing cold metro train in winter - always nice and toasty then. What gives, anyway?
I'll take cold over hot anyday during the summer, and in work clothing. It's not to easy, for guys especially, to dress down when it's 90 out. But is is easier to put more on.
This is opposite from my home view, as you can always take more off while in your own home ;)
All Metro cars are equipped with air-conditioning systems, I've often found it a relief from the sometimes 95 degree/95% humidity days in the area, I guess you must have bad luck. If the A/C is having issues you should talk to Metro.

The reply is from Metro Interim GM/CEO Dan Tangherlini:
Takoma Park, MD: hot! My trains have had little or no air conditioning the past 2 days. How to handle this? Intercom to the operator? Call Metro?
Reply: Yes to both. Intercom to the operator, or if you don't have time (or are too shy) please call Metro and report the car number (printed on the front and back of both the inside and outside of each car). You also should consider switching cars on the same train (at the next stop), because problems like these are frequently isolated to one car.
