Fares on the Rise

Lower tax revenue and fiscal crunches always bring bad news for transit riders. And it looks like the new year will bring no respite -- many transit authorities are looking to raise fares in the near future, including:

Montreal: 22% in the last three years
New Jersey transit: Up to 15%
Port Authority of Allegheny County: Base fare from $1.75 to $2.50.
SEPTA: 15% base fare increase
Nashville: Base fare from $1.45 to $1.60
Cincinatti: Change to flat fare, anywhere between $0.20 and $1.00 increase.
Kalamazoo, MI: $0.15 increase now, $0.25 increase in 2007.
