Counter-Terrorism Reaches Roma

As RJ3 has kindly pointed out, I'm on a semi-permanent vacation in Europe until I run out of money. So, for the moment, my posts will be sporadic, but will be ripe with European transit information.

To start us off, while standing in the Termini train station in Rome, I went to snap a picture of the Metro train. The trains look like they're from New York City about twenty years ago - covered entirely, from top to bottom, in graffiti. The trains appear to run on converted underground rail lines, as they're powered from the overhead wires.

Unfortunately, I have no pictures. You're not allowed to take a picture of a metro train in Rome, as I was not-so-politiely informed by a metro train guard. Perhaps if the terrorists can figure out the patterns of graffiti on the side of the train, they'll figure out how best to attack the city. So, no pictures of metro trains from Rome, but know that that Roman police are just as idiotic as those in New York who won't permit cameras on trains.

Go nuts, snap away. If anybody accuses you of terrorism we'll back you up... Although a print out of this web site might help (you don’t look Arab do you?). Try to get people in your pictures (young women, for example). Your pictures will be more interesting and it will give a better idea of the size of the train. I assume you are using a digital camera, so if you get caught they can’t rip out the film and ruin it. Everybody in Rome has a cell phone, surely some of them are picture phones.

Ask under what rule you can’t take the picture. Italian authorities are notorious for making it up on the go. That said, there was an article in the paper today* about an lady in Washington being arrested for eating a chocolate bar in a Metro station! They didn’t say what brand.

*(A Maryland woman says a transit officer in Washington, DC, handcuffed and held her for three hours after she finished a candy bar at a Metro station ... )

P.S. I’ve taken public transit in 33 countries. Trust me, those subway rides will become less and less memorable.

Go to http://www.graffiti.org/midniterun/flix/rome/ for a great pictures of graffiti from the Rome subway. You can also Google Image with ‘Rome subway’ to see a few hundred other pictures of the subway.
