D'oh! BART gets slammed on Ridership predictions.
According to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, a 16.3-mile proposed extension of BART from Fremont through San Jose to Santa Clara is one of the least cost-effective potential projects in the U.S. -- with two of every three seats empty each weekday, reports the Mercury News.
Suprising for BART, which tends to be a pretty good transit system.

The problem with BART extensions to San Jose and Santa Clara is that there is that San Jose and Santa Clara are really spread out, there isn't a whole lot in downtown San Jose and even less in downtow Santa Clara. Think northern New Jersey around Fair Lawn but even less dense. Even more fun--much of the proposed BART extension follows or parallels the fairly new, existing light rail system, which last I checked at rather low ridership.
2 out of 3 seats empty, eh? 33% occupancy, then; compares favourably with cars, then where occupancy is 24% (1.2 passengers per car) by the latest UK stats.
