Facing up to transit reality
The Associated Press (printed in this article on KnoxNews reports that Tennessee is beginning to face issues that most of the larger urban areas in the country faced early last century -- massive population growth. They're trying to prepare for it by pushing for transit now, before it gets too out of hand. Unfortunately, they're facing a state that's entirely pro-car, a $30 million transit budget (compared to a $1 billion road budget), and no innovative ideas to push transit forward.

That state is a complete basketcase - let's not forget the riots that ensued when the governor wanted to ease the ~10% sales taxes with an income tax in order to even out the revenue stream and make collections less regressive. Tennessee can sit in traffic and rot in the smog for all I care. Except Memphis. I hear Memphis is cool.
Same thing happened in TX around '95 when someone (Bush? Then-state treasurer Kay Hutchison?) casually suggested a 1% income tax to reduce either sales or property taxes.
No wonder the lottery jackpots get driven up so high...
